The biggest question I get asked, as a professional personal branding photographer, is what do I wear? Look through your closet, but here are some specific ideas for you to assemble your perfect outfit selection.
A dress. This can be the classic LBD, or something in a bright hue like a forest green, royal blue or usia, whatever goes with your brand colors and style. This can be professional /formal (not evening wear though) or it can be more everyday appropriate, but think about the tone you set when you’re in action in your business.
A jacket. A suit jacket, jean jacket or something in between. Adding a jacket will give you variety and a different personality in your photos. It can take down the formal edge on a dress or elevate a jeans-and-top outfit.
A change of shoes. From heels to wedges to boots or booties, bring two or three pairs of shoes. Paired with the LBD, some hot pink heels or cowboy boots will give a different vibe. Always think about what you would wear while operating your business, the highest version of yourself that you want clients to see, balanced with your own personality.
A pant suit or jeans with a top or two. It’s good to have outfit changes because it will elicit different sides of your character in your personal branding photos. When a client looks at your website or social media, seeing different poses and outfits gives the impression you’re actively working, rather than I had a photo shoot and got multiple images with the same outfit. It can look lazy or like you didn’t care enough to invest properly in your photo session.
Jewelry. If you wear any at all, bring a few options, based on your outfits. Earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces. A pin for your jacket lapel. Here again is another place for you to exhibit some of your individuality so you stand our from someone else.
Items that fit! This cannot be understated. If something is a little too tight, it will be amplified in photography. Pick items which fit your body now. Clothing which make you fidget and pull at constantly will affect your photos.
A ready-to-work perspective! Have you ever heard Jay Danzie’s saying your smile is your logo? There’s truth to this, and you have a big part in making this photo session a success. Personal branding photos take a little effort from you, plus some skill and lighting magic on the part of a branding photographer like me. However, the benefit to your business will last far beyond this brief session, giving you images which will add value and substance to your brand for months.
The ultimate benefits are boosts to your confidence and leveling up your brand, which leads to an increase in sales. Complete win/win/win scenario.
